Desert Sky is one of our most popular patterns for beginners, The pattern was designed by Judy Niemeyer. A sewing technique called foundation paper piecing is used when sewing the pieces onto the foundation units. Curved piecing and traditional piecing are required to join the units after the foundation piecing is completed.
This is a fast-paced workshop where participants will create their own singularly beautiful work of a faceted gem using the single-foundation piecing technique I used to create my own “diamond quilts”. Participants choose one of several pre-selected abstract gem designs based on their skill level. They learn how to chart on freezer paper, code pieces for color, location and position template pieces onto fabric to achieve the desired light effects. Using the Wonder Curve Ruler, one of the rulers from the Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Ruler collection, we will work together to create a contemporary quilt design using your choice of fabrics. This makes a large queen size quilt (94” x 94”). There will be pre-class work to be completed that will facilitate progress when you get to class. This large block quilt has three layout options that will highlight your favorite layer cake or print fabrics. Each over-sized block is quilted individually then joined together with a special sashing technique. This is a great way to quilt larger quilts in smaller, manageable sections. You will learn everything you need to complete your quilt during our class session. Dana will take the class step by step through to process of piecing a Legit Kit. This is paper piecing which produces a sculptured picture with high lights and shadows using the kits Kona fabrics. Students must bring a kit (not just a pattern) so that they have everything need to complete a picture worthy fabric painting. The only other supplies required are the standard sewing supplies.
The scrappy appliqué class will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 - 9 am to 4 pm. Scrappy Appliqué is a raw-edge appliqué technique that is fun and approachable for beginners and experienced quilters, alike. Participants will learn the method developed by Shannon to create these unique scrappy quilts.
