SUMMARY:Sue Cortese Workshop - Snow/Ice Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we will explore the serendipity that is snow/ice dyeing.  We will be using Procion MX Fiber Reactive dyes and either snow or ice to help disperse and distribute the dyes onto the fabric.  We will explore different folding and scrunching techniques to see the textures that they create in the dyeing process.  This dyeing technique gives the fabric a watercolor type effect.  When snow is not available\, ice can be used as a substitute.  This process is not for the control freak…the person who wants to controlled outcomes or doesn’t handle a bit of messiness.  Dyes\, auxiliary chemicals and supplies are provided as part of a kit fee.  Fabric can provided upon request prior to class.  Students will still need to provide containers and other supplies.  Samples of snow dyed fabric are below. \nClass length: 3 hours. \nLevel:  Beginner \nSupply List: Ice/Snow Dyeing

DESCRIPTION:Schoolhouse Event and Membership Drive All in One!\nAlong with all of the regular shenanigans\, like food\, games\, food\, fellowship\, more food\, and our annual garage sale\, you can expect more fun activities at your Summertime Event. Here’s the current scoop…\nIf you are a member of the West Michigan Quilters’ Guild and you have an interesting quilting technique that you would like to share with other members of the guild\, then we have some exciting news for you! \nAt this year’s WMQG Summertime Event\, July 24th\, we will have a Schoolhouse Sharing time. This is how it works: \n\nTables will be set up in the fellowship hall portion of\nthe church – at this point we are planning for 4-5\ntables per session with 4-5 teachers presenting at\nonce.\nAt each table will be 10-15 chairs for those that have\ncome to learn.\nThe teacher will present a 15-minute instructional\nsession for these students.\n\nIf you are teaching any type of quilting in the west\nMichigan area\, this would be a great way for you to get yourself in front of potential students and a great way to share your skills with your fellow members. \nDuring this event\, the Publicity Committee will be\nwelcoming oodles of visitors and potential new members. A postcard mailing to over 1\,500 quilt enthusiasts will have been completed inviting them to the Summer Event so they can see how much fun our guild really is. These visitors will be offered a gift bag with tons of information about our organization and a special offer to join our guild. \nWe will be needing volunteers for: \n\nGreeters\nTour Guides\nGift Bag Assembly/Restocking\n\nIf you are interested in teaching one or more of these sessions or signing up to volunteer for the membership drive\, please contact one of the committee members below. \nWe will also have a table with sign up sheets and will be available to answer questions at the May meeting. \nSummer Event & Publicity Committee\nNancy Roelfsema | nancy@onpoint-tv.com\nMichelle Sheler | michelle@shelerdesign.com\nAdrienne Wilson | adriennekiwi@comcast.com

SUMMARY:Norma Whaley LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:“My Quilting Legacy”\nReflections About Me\nI grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota\, the land of 10\,000 lakes. My earliest adventure in business was selling night crawlers to the many fishermen traveling to the lakes near our family farm. That business adventure has a questionable connection to my current one of designing quilt patterns and projects\, but everything must have its beginnings. \nI was greatly influenced by the warm utility quilts which kept us cozy through long\, cold Minnesota winters. These of course were scrap quilts made by the women in my family. This is still the kind of quilt I’m consistently drawn to. I love the culture of quilting. Women coming together to create something of beauty for their homes\, and at the same time sharing hopes\, dreams\, recipies\, gardening tips and soul sustenance. I love the quote by a pioneer woman who wrote “I make quilts as fast as I can to keep my family warm and as pretty as I can to keep my heart from breaking.” \nWe all quilt for many reasons. Besides being a wife\, a mother\, a nurse\, I am a quilter. I love to create\, design and work with fabric. I consider my quilts to be my legacy; they will help to tell my life’s story. And because I also love inspiring beautifully written words\, they often find their way into my pattern packets and my quilt labels. \nMembers – Free\nGeneral Admission – $7

SUMMARY:Norma Whaley WORKSHOP - Remember The Giver
DESCRIPTION:Remember The Giver\nThis wall hanging is made\, by stitching wool to a cotton background. I enjoy mixing these mediums\, and it makes the expense more reasonable rather than working with wool. \nThe backgrounds of the blocks are pieced… the more fabric the better\, right? I love the interest this adds to the backgrounds with the blending of fabrics. \nIn the class\, I will share tips I’ve picked up along the way in working with wool. We will discuss the pros and cons of working with a fusible product or just using freezer paper. Students should feel free to do what they already love doing. \nKit available. \nNote:  $50 for Members – $60 for Non-members

SUMMARY:Anita Grossman Soloman WORKSHOP - Self Mitered Log Cabin
DESCRIPTION:Self Mitered Log Cabin\nThe unique Make It Simpler® Self-Mitered Log Cabin Quilt below is a fabric lover’s jewel box. Anita developed a streamlined technique based on her prize-winning entry in Jinny Beyer’s 1997 “Basic Realities” contest. The 6″ finished blocks are simple to sew and the quilt construction is straightforward. Without using pins\, 1 1/2″ strips of fabric intersect on their own to form a precise miter. Expect Anita to have a trick up her sleeve. The book Rotary Cutting Revolution is required for the Self-Mitered Log Cabin.  It is a paperback available from the usual sources. It’s also included free in my Craftsy class as a downloadable bonus eBook (PDF). \nAdvance preparation (cutting 16 different 1 1/2″ x 8″ fabric rectangles:  6 light\, 4 medium\, 6 dark) is necessary for the workshop. Please cut the rectangles from starched fabric for class. \nNote:  Cost for Workshop is $50 for Guild Members and $60 for Non-Members \n  \nSUPPLY LIST

SUMMARY:Frieda Anderson LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrieda made her first quilt when she was in high school. She has always made things and she loves the process of creating. In college\, she majored in Art History and minored in ceramics\, but she returned to fiber because it was more satisfying. \nFor years\, Frieda’s focus was on designing and making clothing. All that changed in 1992\, however\, when she was in fashion design and realized that all she wanted to do was make quilts. She has been designing and making original art quilts ever since. \nFrieda finds each step of quilt making\, from the beginning to the end\, a real challenge. She loves the pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt. She also loves to piece and fuse. Frieda has found that by fusing smaller pieces\, she can work out design issues. Then\, she likes to make a bigger\, bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large format. Most of her work is machine quilted and nature inspired. \nJoin Frieda for inspiring lecture where she discusses “Fun\, Free Motion Quilting”. \nMembers – Free\nGeneral Admission – $7
