SUMMARY:Lynn Harris - Lecture "Do it for the Process"
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE\nDo it for the Process Lynn will share some of her quilts and talk about her journey from  the first quilt she made as a teenager in 1976 to her current work. She has found that the steps of making a quilt are often more meaningful to her than the completed quilt. Focusing on the creative process rather than the finished product allows her time in the studio to be filled with play and discovery.

SUMMARY:The Combat Quilter
DESCRIPTION:I am a 20 year veteran with 2 combat deployments to Iraq in 2006 and 2009. I have tried many different ways to find comfort from my PTSD. War causes many things we struggle with; fear of loud noises\, difficulty sleeping\, readjusting to normal life\, and emotional numbness. I began quilting in 2016 after my wife stated “we don’t do enough together.” On a random afternoon\, I found myself checking the mailbox to find a flyer for a quilted table runner class at a local quilt shop. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to do something out of the box with my wife. After a shopping trip to buy more fabric\, we met the husband and wife team that sew “Quilts of Valor” and I was invited to join their male quilt group. After several evenings sewing with these fine gentleman\, i completed my first quilt. I awarded my first Quilt of Valor to a 93 year old WWII veteran; which caused me to feel real\, raw emotion; the first time truly feeling something after returning home. I became addicted to being able to feel something; other than anger and frustration. I then became committed to the cause\, and since then\, have awarded 219 Quilts of Valor. I have met so many amazing people along the way\, and am attempting to find a way to help others deal with the PTSD and finding a purpose. For the longest time I felt God was sprinkling pebbles along the ground\, saying follow me. Then\, one day in prayer he shared an image that showed these pebbles were the filler for the stepping stones he has laid for me. I hope my “Shock an Awe” quilt pays tribute to all those veterans struggling\, and see that a hobby of some sort will help. My “We Stand United” quilt is dedicated to all those first responders\, fire fighters\, police officers\, paramedics\, nurses\, and doctors that continue to struggle with the things they see and feel on a daily bases. I hope people feel inspired by my artwork\, and find a way to help those with the daily battle with their demons.

SUMMARY:A Lesson in Every Quilt Lecture with Kristin Echols
DESCRIPTION:This is a one-hour lecture where I show over 40 of my quilts and describe the lessons learned in making quilts using the Quilt-As-You-Go method. Additionally\, I show other quilts and techniques I’ve learned. I will show the ugliest quilt I have made and tell you the lessons I have learned. \nI teach quilting and am known for my “reversible” or “quilt-as-you-go” classes. Many quilters enjoy piecing blocks and quilt tops but aren’t sure how to finish their quilts. It can be expensive to send out every quilt for professional long-arm quilting\, and many quilters are daunted by trying to quilt a whole quilt on their home machines. \nI teach students how to quilt one block\, row\, or section at a time and then join the sections with sashing strips. This is a technique that can be applied to many patterns\, and in each class we look at a variety of quilts and patterns.  Students leave class with a new skill that they can apply to their other quilting projects.

SUMMARY:Dana Altman - Certified Legit Instructor Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nDana Altman\, a passionate quilter\, began her quilting journey in 2015 when she inherited her late mother’s unfinished quilt. This event rekindled her love for quilting and led her to explore Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) as an intricate art form. \nDana’s discovery of Legit Kits\, known for captivating animal-themed quilts\, further fueled her passion. Her first Legit Kits project\, “Flamingoes\,” inspired her to become a Legit Kits Certified Instructor. \nDana is a proud supporter of the Quilts of Valor whose mission is to cover service members and veterans who have been touched by war with a comforting and healing quilt. \nShe warmly invites others to join her on an enchanting quilting journey\, exploring the artistry of quilting one stitch at a time and finding joy in crafting intricate masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Mapping Personal Spaces with Valerie S. Goodwin (2 - 4hr workshop)
DESCRIPTION:“MAP MAKER\, MAP MAKER\, Make Me a Map!” \nM A P P I N G P E R S O N A L P L A C E S… … … . \nTaught by Valerie S. Goodwin R. A. – Fiber Artist   www.valeriegoodwinart.com valeriegoodwin@comcast.net \nIntermediate to Advanced \nLength: Two Days – May 27 1-4 PM and May 28 12-4 \nMap of the Instructor’s Home Or Community \nThis workshop is all about learning to make a simple stitched map of a place that is special to you – \nWHERE YOU LIVE. To make this map\, you will use of simple hand & machine stitches combined with \nsilk organza\, opaque fabric\, and a bit of paint. The goal is to create a small fiber art map that is light \nan 8” x 8” to 11” x 11”.  Also covered\, will be how to use the internet to find maps that will serve as your starting point. As we \ngo along\, you will see the potential of variations on the techniques I will teach you. This workshop \nmay inspire you to make a collection of personal stitched maps. Really\, the possibilities are almost \nendless. Upon completion\, you should have a lovely little work of stitched art. \nImportant Note: \n• Because this class will require students to have a map of their chosen favorite place on hand\, some pre-planning and \ncommunication with each student will be required so that each person brings a map that can be used in this workshop. \n• It will be important to email the instructor your prospective maps about 2 weeks before the workshop so that she can help \nyou make choices. Her email address is valeriegoodwin@comcast.net \n  \n

SUMMARY:Map It Virtual Lecture - with Valerie Goodwin
DESCRIPTION:Valerie S. Goodwin is a mixed media fiber artist and architect whose works of fine art are included in museum and private collections.  Most of her work is inspired by a love of aerial views of landscapes and cities.  Many of her quilts are based on maps.  Goodwin’s art has moved rough various stages from traditional quilting to an interest in abstract landscapes and cities.  In some cases\, her work shows an architectural sense of space with an archaeological perspective.  In others\, the network of city and its built form is more prominent.  These compositions work on several levels\, from close up and far away as if one was looking at it from above. \nHer work is know for its use of intricate lines and shapes which create complex fiber art maps. Closer inspection of her work shows that these patters are city blocks and landscapes inspired by aerial views of real and imaginary places.  She combines her love of architecture and draws inspiration from architectural maps\, plans\, and concepts.  Recently\, she has added a series of fiber art maps that explore the possibilities of laser cut fabric.  She is intrigued by the intricacy and complexity of the lines and shapes this technology can create.  This direction has given her the opportunity to future explore layering and transparency as well as light and shadow by creating what she calls “lace-like” maps.  Although it is a good direction\, her work still focuses on the geometrical relationships\, patterns\, ordering principles found in architecture. \nShe received degrees in architecture from Washington University and Yale University. Her award winning work has been widely published and exhibited. She also lectures and gives workshops nationally and internationally. For over 26 years\, she taught architectural design at Florida A & M University. \nHer book\, Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage-A Visual Guide is widely available.
