SUMMARY:Dana Altman - Certified Legit Instructor Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nDana Altman\, a passionate quilter\, began her quilting journey in 2015 when she inherited her late mother’s unfinished quilt. This event rekindled her love for quilting and led her to explore Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) as an intricate art form. \nDana’s discovery of Legit Kits\, known for captivating animal-themed quilts\, further fueled her passion. Her first Legit Kits project\, “Flamingoes\,” inspired her to become a Legit Kits Certified Instructor. \nDana is a proud supporter of the Quilts of Valor whose mission is to cover service members and veterans who have been touched by war with a comforting and healing quilt. \nShe warmly invites others to join her on an enchanting quilting journey\, exploring the artistry of quilting one stitch at a time and finding joy in crafting intricate masterpieces.

SUMMARY:A Lesson in Every Quilt Lecture with Kristin Echols
DESCRIPTION:This is a one-hour lecture where I show over 40 of my quilts and describe the lessons learned in making quilts using the Quilt-As-You-Go method. Additionally\, I show other quilts and techniques I’ve learned. I will show the ugliest quilt I have made and tell you the lessons I have learned. \nI teach quilting and am known for my “reversible” or “quilt-as-you-go” classes. Many quilters enjoy piecing blocks and quilt tops but aren’t sure how to finish their quilts. It can be expensive to send out every quilt for professional long-arm quilting\, and many quilters are daunted by trying to quilt a whole quilt on their home machines. \nI teach students how to quilt one block\, row\, or section at a time and then join the sections with sashing strips. This is a technique that can be applied to many patterns\, and in each class we look at a variety of quilts and patterns.  Students leave class with a new skill that they can apply to their other quilting projects.

SUMMARY:The Combat Quilter
DESCRIPTION:I am a 20 year veteran with 2 combat deployments to Iraq in 2006 and 2009. I have tried many different ways to find comfort from my PTSD. War causes many things we struggle with; fear of loud noises\, difficulty sleeping\, readjusting to normal life\, and emotional numbness. I began quilting in 2016 after my wife stated “we don’t do enough together.” On a random afternoon\, I found myself checking the mailbox to find a flyer for a quilted table runner class at a local quilt shop. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to do something out of the box with my wife. After a shopping trip to buy more fabric\, we met the husband and wife team that sew “Quilts of Valor” and I was invited to join their male quilt group. After several evenings sewing with these fine gentleman\, i completed my first quilt. I awarded my first Quilt of Valor to a 93 year old WWII veteran; which caused me to feel real\, raw emotion; the first time truly feeling something after returning home. I became addicted to being able to feel something; other than anger and frustration. I then became committed to the cause\, and since then\, have awarded 219 Quilts of Valor. I have met so many amazing people along the way\, and am attempting to find a way to help others deal with the PTSD and finding a purpose. For the longest time I felt God was sprinkling pebbles along the ground\, saying follow me. Then\, one day in prayer he shared an image that showed these pebbles were the filler for the stepping stones he has laid for me. I hope my “Shock an Awe” quilt pays tribute to all those veterans struggling\, and see that a hobby of some sort will help. My “We Stand United” quilt is dedicated to all those first responders\, fire fighters\, police officers\, paramedics\, nurses\, and doctors that continue to struggle with the things they see and feel on a daily bases. I hope people feel inspired by my artwork\, and find a way to help those with the daily battle with their demons.

SUMMARY:Lynn Harris - Lecture "Do it for the Process"
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE\nDo it for the Process Lynn will share some of her quilts and talk about her journey from  the first quilt she made as a teenager in 1976 to her current work. She has found that the steps of making a quilt are often more meaningful to her than the completed quilt. Focusing on the creative process rather than the finished product allows her time in the studio to be filled with play and discovery.

SUMMARY:Phyllis Fay Lecture - Introduction to the Fundamental Studio 180 Design Tools
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to improve the precision of making basic units for any pattern by using the Studio 180 Design tools by Deb Tucker. The concept is to make the basic unit slightly oversized so that you can trim it to the exact measurements you need without losing any points. You will want to use these techniques on any pattern you purchase. As you progress into the advanced tools\, you will quickly find yourself designing your own blocks and improving your piecing.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Beth Helfter - Give It A Scrap Slap
DESCRIPTION:As a mostly scrappy designer\, Beth prefers to dig into her stash to create designs that appeal to her senses of color and value\, using as many different fabrics as possible. Keeping to just a few color families in each quilt palette is one of her best tricks to keeping scrappy quilts from getting too out of hand but allowing them to sing with tone and movement. \nAs a member of Quiltmaker Magazine’s 2014 Scrap Squad\, she recreated a design from each of six issues using only scraps\, and was able to bring out different secondary designs and block highlights simply by adding more tone and value\, as scrap quilts will do.Since founding EvaPaige Quilt Designs in 2005\, she has published a vast range of scrappy patterns and her work has been featured in various quilting magazines and on well known quilting websites.

SUMMARY:Pam Buda Lecture - Secrets of Professional Quilters Revealed!
DESCRIPTION:This Power Point presentation is packed full of very useful information that will teach you to use alternative piecing methods for making units\, as well as tips and hints relating to every aspect of quilting. Pam also shares secrets she’s gathered over years of trial & error\, taking classes\, and learning from what fellow designers and national teachers have shared with her. \nThe lesson begins with learning the “Make it larger – Trim it down” techniques.  Pam demonstrates step-by-step techniques for making units (such as Half Square Triangles\, Quarter Square Triangles\, Square-in-a-Square units\, and Flying Geese) larger than they need to be so they can be trimmed down to be squared and the correct size.  These perfectly squared units go on to be perfectly squared blocks\, then squared quilts that lay flat and go together easily!! Many\, many designers and award winning quilters use these techniques and you can too! \nThere are also plenty of tips on a variety of subjects such as general pressing tips\, pressing Four Patches and Pinwheels to lay perfectly flat\, and how to correctly sew Connector Corners\, accurate 1/4 inch seams\, alternate sewing methods for the Corner Square Triangle units\, how to hide flaws and errors\, and so much more! \nAfter watching the Power Point presentation\, Pam will show more than 50 quilts to view up close and personal\, all made with the techniques shown in the presentation. \nYou can see Pam’s artistry at heartspunquilts.blogspot.com \nMembers – Free\nGeneral Admission – $7

SUMMARY:Sue Cortese LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 22\, 2019:  Tonight’s WMQG Meeting and Lecture have been canceled due to weather.\n\n“My Quilting Journey”\nIn this lecture\, Sue will take people through the quilts that she has made. From some of her first quilts to some of her most recent quilts. \nWhen she started quilting\, her quest was to make a quilt from every pattern and technique. This challenge has led her to take classes from some of the top national educators and create a diverse and varied stockpile of quilts. \nSue will talk about what she has learned about color\, pattern\, balance\, and variety. Originality has also been a big thing for her. When she started out\, she was following patterns\, but tried to find a way to put her own touch into each quilt. During the lecture\, Sue will go through some of her milestone quilts:  her first ribbon winner\, her first original design\, her first published quilt\, etc. She will talk about what was successful and what was not.

SUMMARY:Norma Whaley LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:“My Quilting Legacy”\nReflections About Me\nI grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota\, the land of 10\,000 lakes. My earliest adventure in business was selling night crawlers to the many fishermen traveling to the lakes near our family farm. That business adventure has a questionable connection to my current one of designing quilt patterns and projects\, but everything must have its beginnings. \nI was greatly influenced by the warm utility quilts which kept us cozy through long\, cold Minnesota winters. These of course were scrap quilts made by the women in my family. This is still the kind of quilt I’m consistently drawn to. I love the culture of quilting. Women coming together to create something of beauty for their homes\, and at the same time sharing hopes\, dreams\, recipies\, gardening tips and soul sustenance. I love the quote by a pioneer woman who wrote “I make quilts as fast as I can to keep my family warm and as pretty as I can to keep my heart from breaking.” \nWe all quilt for many reasons. Besides being a wife\, a mother\, a nurse\, I am a quilter. I love to create\, design and work with fabric. I consider my quilts to be my legacy; they will help to tell my life’s story. And because I also love inspiring beautifully written words\, they often find their way into my pattern packets and my quilt labels. \nMembers – Free\nGeneral Admission – $7

SUMMARY:Frieda Anderson LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrieda made her first quilt when she was in high school. She has always made things and she loves the process of creating. In college\, she majored in Art History and minored in ceramics\, but she returned to fiber because it was more satisfying. \nFor years\, Frieda’s focus was on designing and making clothing. All that changed in 1992\, however\, when she was in fashion design and realized that all she wanted to do was make quilts. She has been designing and making original art quilts ever since. \nFrieda finds each step of quilt making\, from the beginning to the end\, a real challenge. She loves the pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt. She also loves to piece and fuse. Frieda has found that by fusing smaller pieces\, she can work out design issues. Then\, she likes to make a bigger\, bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large format. Most of her work is machine quilted and nature inspired. \nJoin Frieda for inspiring lecture where she discusses “Fun\, Free Motion Quilting”. \nMembers – Free\nGeneral Admission – $7
